The final round of the Spanish Supermoto championship was held at the Gasss74 circuit in Villena, Valencia over the weekend and the Supermotoland Spicesolutions.pl race team had 3 riders, racing in 2 classes.
All the hard work pays off
Loris Ford-Dunn was fresh back from his win in the S1 polish championship and was keen to back it up with a race win in the Spanish S1/SM pro championship. The hard work that Loris had put in over the summer break by training everyday at the supermotoland training track paid off. He was fastest in FP1 and qualifying Practice which gave him pole position for the superpole race.
Epic superpole race
In the superpole race Loris and the newly crowned Spanish SM pro champion, Jose Luis Crespo had a fantastic race long battle. Loris was first off the line but hit a false neutral entering the dirt section and slipped back. But soon it was Loris and Crespo out front and battling for the lead all race long. Crespo held off the challenge from Loris and won the race to take pole position for the two main event races.
Race one and he nearly didn’t finish
Loris started from P2 on the grid but made a great start to lead the race. Once again it was Loris and Crespo fighting it out at the front. The pair swapped places several times with Crespo faster in the dirt section and Loris faster on the Asphalt. In the end it was Loris that held the lead and pulled a small gap to win the race. But he was lucky to finish, as a part in his clutch had broken early on in the race and he was only able to use 3rd to 5th gears.
Race two and Loris Ford-Dunn does the double
With a new clutch fitted, Loris made a great start and pushed hard in the early laps to make a gap to his closest rival, Crespo. Then it was just a case of maintaining a fast consistent pace in the 30 degree Spanish heat over the 15 minutes plus two laps race. He won and got the overall win, his first win in the Sm pro class with dirt, it was an amazing feeling.
That makes 3 wins in 3 different championships!
With the Spanish championship win, to add to his Polish championship win and Catalan championship win, its been a really rewarding summer for Loris Ford-Dunn and it shows that hard work pays off eventually. Well done Loris.
Team mates battle it out in the SM road Master class
Nick Cronin and Ryan Blackburn were both racing in the SM road Master class. Both of them had flown in from the UK to race and it was a weekend to remember.
A good start
Both riders were up to speed quickly and after learning the track in FP1 they set about laying down some fast laps in Qualifying. Ryan had a new rear thumb brake fitted from Hel Performance and used it to full effect to secure P2 in qualifying. Nick went a step further and managed to secure pole position, his first pole position in the SM road master class.
Positions secured in the superpole race
Both riders lined up for the superpole race and pushed as hard as they could for the short 8 minutes plus 2 laps sprint race, that determines the grid position for the two main races. After the usual bundle into the first corner the race settled down and both Nick and Ryan pushed hard to secure a P1 and P2 for the team. A great result, and the perfect grid position for the main races.
Fast crash in turn one
Race one had a messy start and both Nick and Ryan lost places. But they were soon down to business and making up positions. Then Nick tried a bold move when a rider in front of him ran wide, Nick went for the gap but the rear wheel spun out and Nick crashed out of the fast turn one. He was quickly up and running to his bike and restarted last. Meantime Ryan had taken the lead and was pushing hard.
Charge through the pack and a bar in the ribs
Nicks crash started a fantastic race as he remounted and then pushed hard to make up as many lost positions as possible. Lap by lap he passed riders and then began to eventually chase down Ryan who was leading. With about 5 laps to go Nick caught up to Ryan and then there was a great battle between the team mates for the race win. Nick tried everything to get past but Ryan was having none of it and ran defensive lines to stop the pass. The riders even banged bars at one point but they kept it clean and despite the pressure Ryan managed to hold off Nick to the flag and secure his first ever moto win at national supermoto level.
Race 2 and Nick Cronin takes the win
With Ryan taking the race win in Race one, Nick knew that if he wanted the overall win, then the winner of the 2nd moto will take it if both riders are on equal points. He rode a superb race. Not putting a foot wrong this time and pulled out a lead to win the 2nd race and with it the overall win in the Sm road Master class. Ryan pushed hard but fatigue set in under the hot Spanish sun and he had nothing for Nicks pace in race 2. But Ryan bought it home in 2nd position and secured a 2nd overall for the weekends racing.
P1 and P2, what a weekend
With all three team riders producing their best ever results in class it was a great weekend to have everyone on the podium.
